Hello and welcome to the Gender Identity page! In each community, some people may have a sound knowledge surrounding gender identity, know what it is, and use that knowledge to promote inclusive environments in their private and working lives. Others may have little knowledge surrounding gender identity. Some may have never even heard of gender identity before. Regardless of background, the purpose of the content created for this section is to help provide a safe space for raising awareness, gaining knowledge, and asking questions for all those who would like to learn more about gender identity. Having a willingness to learn will help create inclusive classrooms, compassionate communities, and will positively benefit the learner.

Gender identity refers to an individual’s sense of their personal gender. It is often assumed that gender identity correlates to an individual’s biological sex typically assigned at birth. However, it is important that we strive to avoid assuming someone else’s gender identity based on their appearance, their anatomy, their biological sex, and even just by the way they express themselves (the way they act, talk, dress, etc.). You will have an opportunity to discover and learn more about the differences between a person’s gender identity, their biological/assigned sex, preferred pronouns, and also how these things differ from LGBTQ+.

In this section, students and teachers alike can find great resources to help foster equality, respect, and inclusion when working with diverse students in film, theatre, and other artistic environments.
