Sometimes when auditioning for a show, the director will ask you to sing a song in the style of the show. What this means is that you should choose a song that has similar elements, comes from the same era, or has similar musical characteristics to the show you’re auditioning for. This does not mean to choose a song directly from the musical the audition is for. For example, if I were auditioning for The Music Man, I would not choose a song from that show. However, I know that The Music Man is from the Golden Age, so I might choose a song from Oklahoma! or Guys and Dolls, both shows from the same era. Doing research on the show you are auditioning for is important for you to understand the style of audition song you should pick to sing. The song you choose should be a song with objectives and a clear focus on what the character wants in that moment.
