Unfortunately even today it is not uncommon for us to hear homophobic/transphobic or other Anti-LGBTQ language thrown around amongst students at school or sometimes within our own families. 60% of out youth, as well as 46% of youth who are not out, have admitted to being harassed at school with such language. This type of language can lead to poor self-esteem and a negative self image. It also can work to reinforce negative stereotypes that are not accurate, an example of this being saying the word “gay” and meaning “dumb” or “stupid”.

Knowing what a negative effect anti-LGBTQ language can have on people, how should we go about correcting it when you hear it? Consider how you should respond when you hear this language used by a friend, or another classmate, or even a family member or teacher? What should they know about the language they are using? What is an alternative they could be saying? Write your thoughts in 1-2 paragraphs.
