In addition, Ruth has received many honors from various groups including Critic’s Choice Awards, The Costume Designers Guild, and even an honorary degree from Suffolk University.

Ruth E. Carter has a deep connection and love for representing her African American culture. In an interview for Oprah Daily she stated, “I’ve always cared deeply about African American history. I’ve always thought that I was a person who could depict the culture and journey of Black Americans in this country accurately. Whether it be dreadlocks or a drop crotch, I feel a connection to our history, and a great responsibility to honor my past and the history of Africans and African Americans.”
