Hey everyone! Welcome back to The Singing Studio! I am so excited to get started because today is a theory factory video. In fact, the next episode is also a theory factory video. You’re probably wondering why we are learning so much theory! Well it’s important for us to understand rhythm specifically so that we can become better singers and better readers of music. Today I have a very special guest that’s going to be helping us with our rhythm values which is what we’re going to be talking about today. Everyone say hello to Gilmore! This is our special guest today on The Singing Studio. He’s going to be helping us out with some rhythms.

Gilmore is going to be helping us today count out those rhythms so we know how many beats each note gets. You’re probably confused right now – don’t worry we’re going to get into it.

First up we have our quarter note. A quarter note gets one beat and we would count and clap it like this: “one and”. Next we have our half note. Our half note gets two beats and we would count and clap it like this: “one and two and”. Next we have our dotted half note. That gets three beats and this is how we would count and clap that: “one and two and three and”. We also have something called an eighth note. The eighth note gets half a beat. So let’s say I was going to clap and count four eighth notes. This is how it would sound: “one and two and”. Finally, we have our whole note. Our whole note gets four beats and this is how we would count and clap it: “one and two and three and four and”.

Let’s recap everything that we just talked about. Let’s invite our special guest, Gilmore, to help us break down those rhythmic values and remind us how many beats each of these types of notes get. Gilmore how many beats in a quarter note? How would you count two eighth notes? How many beats in a half note? Gilmore how many beats in a dotted half note? How many beats are in a whole note?

Gilmore and I just want to say thank you so much for watching this video! We hope that you learned a lot about rhythm values and we hope that you have a wonderful day. Say bye, Gilmore! Goodbye!

I do these videos every other week, but if you still want more musical theatre, check out my newsletter! It’s called “Beyond The Score”, and it just takes a closer look at musical theatre history. You can find that at jskstories.com.

Do you think we did a good job today Gilmore? I think so! High five, high five! Yes! Good job! We did it!
