McKell VO: 60 second tips and tricks. How do you find a monologue? Pause. Wait, what even is a monologue? Let me tell you. A monologue is a long or extended speech, spoken by one person or character in a play, movie, or tv show. Okay let’s go back to finding a monologue now. Start by asking yourself these three questions. Is it comedic or dramatic? What kind of character do you want to play? What genre of a monologue do you need? Deciding if you need a comedic monologue or a dramatic monologue will help you narrow down what to look for. Next, start by making a list of qualities you want to portray with your character. For example; I want to play a character who’s strong or timid or goofy. Figure out what genre of monologue you need. This could be Shakespeare, contemporary, something from a specific decade and so on.

What now? Get to work! Research plays and monologues that match your answers. Google is a great place to start!
