Hello friends. It’s Janine from JSK Stories. I’m excited to bring you today’s Creativity Lesson: Do it for yourself.

One of the things that I struggle with whenever I begin a creative project – whether in a medium I’m very comfortable with (such as writing) or a new medium that I’m playing around with (such as drawing), my mind starts drifting to the potential audience for the project.

Will they like it?

Will this bring me success?

How will I reach them?

While there is nothing wrong with wanting to share your work with an audience (and have some success along the way), the true gift of creativity is the exchange that happens between you and your chosen medium.

Creativity is, above all, for YOU. To make you happy. To feed your soul. To enlighten your spirit. And in order to do that effectively, you need to do it for yourself. Before any other consideration. If you find an audience, then fabulous. But you will connect with them at the highest level when you are first doing your art for you.

Which brings us to today’s Creativity Challenge.

Creativity Challenge: Spend 10-15 minutes doing something creative. Write a short story. Draw something. Sing a favorite song. Make up a dance routine. Or anything else. DON’T share it with anyone. Just spend the time doing something that makes you happy.

Want to share what you learned? You can submit your thoughts here. Who knows, we just might share it in an upcoming video.
