Have you ever been told that you can’t do something or participate in something because “that’s what boys do” or “that’s only for girls”? Have you ever been told that you should be doing something because that’s what other boys or girls are doing, too? It’s important to talk about gender norms and roles and why we’ve heard phrases like “you can’t do that because that’s for boys/girls”.

Over the course of history, society has categorized behaviors, activities, appearances, careers, clothing, and even a person’s name into what is appropriate for boys and what is appropriate for girls. In addition, society has separated those same things into what is not appropriate for boys and what is not appropriate for girls. However, the true question to be asked is why were these categories and differences even put in place? Is it truly wrong for a boy to participate in a dance class, even though society views dancing as something that is for girls? Is it wrong for a girl to play on her school’s football team even though the rest of her teammates are boys? The answer to both of those questions is no- it is not wrong.

One of the most important messages that could ever be stressed to you is to be yourself!! It doesn’t matter if you dress, speak, or participate in activities that society sees as “untypical” for someone of your gender. If you are a boy and you like the color pink, by all means, wear pink! If you are a girl and want to be Darth Vader for Halloween, by all means, be Darth Vader! Regardless of your gender or how you identify, you should always pursue the things that you love. Do what makes you happy! By staying true to yourself, you will find that you will have a happy life- no matter what other people may think or say!

Gender Identity Scenario #4

With a partner or small group, list several activities, clothing items, sports, hobbies, etc. that are typically associated with “boys” or “girls”. Then, discuss ways in which you can help break down the societal construct of separating these items between boys and girls.
