Lesson: Respectful Conversations

This lesson plan and accompanying activity are designed to be taught after showing the jsk stories LGBTQ+ presentation. Feel free to change, adjust, and customize these plans according to your classroom or circumstance. The lesson and activity go well together, but can be split into two days.

Concept 1 – Strive for understanding!

  • Discuss: What are some ways I can educate myself?
    1. Learning correct terms and asking respectful questions are a great first step in learning more about the LGBTQ+ community.
    2. Read uplifting literature and watch positive media that highlight LGBTQ+ characters and people! Ask a trusted adult or parent to help you find resources that will encourage better understanding.

Concept 2 – Be mindful of what you say.

  • Discuss: Sometimes we say things without realizing it could hurt someone. How can I make sure I use respectful language?
    1. Write down what you learn! Learning all the terms and definitions can be hard. However, if we take the time to write it down, we can have an easier  time remembering those terms.
    2. Talking to a friend or family member that is a part of the LGBTQ+ community is always best when we don’t understand something. This is because they have had experiences and a first-hand perspective on their community. Not everything on the TV or internet is true, so going straight to the source is always the best way to go!

Concept 3 – Go to a support group!

  • Discuss: Who can go to an LGBTQ+ support group?
    1. Anyone can go to a support group! Support groups are made for people to come together to share experiences and educate others who may be struggling to understand.
    2.  If you have a friend or loved one who is a part of the LGBTQ+ community, ask them about support groups in your area that you could attend. If they are willing, invite them to attend with you!
