Hey you guys and welcome back to  The Singing Studio! This is the final video in a three-part lesson that I’ve been teaching about how to break down a song. So today we are going to be breaking down the song by the text – so by the lyrics or the words. In our previous videos we focus on breaking it down by rhythm, breaking it down by the melody, and now we’re going to do it with the words. I know we’ve all been dying to finally sing Twinkle Twinkle with the words so here we go.

Before we break it down with the words, I want to explain why we have waited this long to finally sing it with the words. Like I said in our previous video, I think sometimes words will mess us up. Sometimes we’re singing the words and if we’re so focused on the words sometimes we’ll forget about the rhythm or forget about the melody. So now that we have the rhythms and melody, adding in the text won’t be so hard and it won’t mess us up as much. So as we are breaking down by the lyrics make sure that you are really enunciating. Make sure that you’re really saying the correct words. We don’t want to mix up any lyrics or anything. It’s just your opportunity to speak the song in rhythm without really thinking of the music yet.

So let’s try speaking that first line of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star together. Twinkle twinkle little star. How I wonder what you are. Awesome, awesome. Now if you are struggling in trying to get the rhythm with the lyrics, try clapping it. Twinkle twinkle little star. How I wonder what you are. Good job you guys.

So that is how we break it down by the text or the lyrics. As a recap we’ve broken it down by rhythm, we’ve broken it down by the melody, and now we’ve broken it down by the text. In an upcoming video we will be focusing on how we can put all of these elements together and I think you’ll be surprised at how much better you will feel about the song after you’ve broken it down just like that and isolated those different elements of breaking down the song. I’m going to leave the song up now so that you can practice clapping and saying the text out loud to the rhythm without the melody. Here you go.

That is all for our video today. This is the final video of our breaking it down series. Make sure if you haven’t seen the other two breaking it down videos check those out, but I’m so excited to move on with you guys and explore how we can put these elements all together to create one awesome song. I hope you have a wonderful day. Thanks!

I do these videos every other week, but if you still want more musical theatre, check out my newsletter! It’s called “Beyond The Score”, and it just takes a closer look at musical theatre history. You can find that at jskstories.com.
